Primary education in the NSW curriculum for Kindergarten to Year 6 and
Japanese curriculum for Years 1 to Year 9 in Terrey Hills, Sydney
We extend a warm invitation to families from both local communities and diverse backgrounds to join our enriching educational journey. Our co-educational environment thrives with two divisions: the International Division (NSW curriculum) and the Japanese Division (Japanese curriculum). Together, they cultivate knowledge on the same campus.
Sydney Japanese International School is a vibrant non-denominational independent school nestled in the lush suburb of Terrey Hills, gracing the picturesque Northern Beaches of Sydney. Since our establishment in 1969, SJIS has played a pivotal role in fostering connections between Japan and Australia. In 1975, the school recognised a growing need for a cultural-based private primary school in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and as a result, the International Division for students in Kindergarten through to Year 6 was established, providing an education that followed the Australian curriculum for local students. Immerse your children in a distinctive learning experience that celebrates the richness of Japanese and Australian culture, instilling virtues that last a lifetime.
What SJIS offers
At SJIS, our team of experienced educators, driven by passion and dedication, cultivates a nurturing environment for academic excellence in smaller, more intimate classes. We actively engage students in school events, while fostering a culture deeply rooted in respect and acceptance.
We provide an unparalleled educational experience within a culturally diverse setting. Students not only develop high proficiency in both Japanese and English languages but also gain a deeper insight into Japanese culture, all while residing in Australia.
Our two divisions, the NSW curriculum stream and the Japanese curriculum stream, collaborate for lessons in visual art, physical education, music, and coding, encouraging students to hone their communication skills in a mixed classroom environment. How exciting it is to try out their language skills on a daily basis right here at school!
Equipped with fluency in two languages, students are prepared to seize numerous opportunities. Many of our graduates continue to study Japanese in local high schools, selective, public and independent, benefiting from accelerated programs due to their exceptional linguistic abilities.
We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome your child into the enriching school communty, where individual growth and global readiness are at the forefront.

Our Mission
Combining two cultures on an international campus, we aim to develop our students to become a ‘kakehashi’ (bridge) who will become mindful leaders of the future.
- The Spirit of Kakehashi
- Connecting the present to the future
- Connecting our students with the world
- Connecting cultures without borders
Two Curriculums. One School.
SJIS presents a dual educational approach through its two distinct divisions.
In the International Division, local and expat students from Kindergarten to Year 6 engage with the NSW curriculum, fostering a rich learning environment with nurturing small class sizes. In this division, daily Japanese language lessons enhance students’ proficiency and cultural understanding, regardless of their initial Japanese proficiency.
Aligned with Japanese education standards, the Japanese Division caters to students from Year 1 to Year 9. Alongside the curriculum, students benefit from daily English lessons, enriching their linguistic abilities.

Acknowledgment of Country
The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling.
May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
