Learning Support | EAL/D

At Sydney Japanese International School, we understand the challenges faced by students who have recently arrived from non-English speaking countries. To support them, we offer a dedicated language support (EAL/D) program delivered by a specialist teacher in a tailored learning environment.

What is EAL/D?

EAL/D stands for English as an Additional Language or Dialect. It refers to the teaching and learning of English by students who speak a language other than English at home. This can include students who are new to Australia or those who come from non-English speaking backgrounds. EAL/D programs help students develop general language skills and access the academic curriculum in classroom settings.

Learning environment

At SJIS, teachers conduct an initial assessment to identify students who would benefit from small group lessons with other students of a similar age and language ability. They participate in these lessons several times a week with a qualified and experienced teacher in a dedicated EAL/D classroom with quality resources. We also provide a bilingual support assistant to help EAL/D students in the classroom.

Class structure and curriculum

Our curriculum is focused on individual student needs and helping them feel confident as they adjust to a new language and culture. Students participate in small group lessons both outside of the regular class, and also receive support in the classroom, and may also attend the English Language Program with Japanese Division students from Year 2 and above. The level and length of support is dependent on each student’s progression.

Families can feel comforted to know that we really support our students in this area. We are experts in language learning and support, and the care provided by our staff is truly outstanding.

Name

The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling. May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
