Our English Language Program provides students with a comprehensive daily language learning experience that equips them to communicate effectively in English, while nurturing a deeper understanding of cultural diversity.

Learning environment

Our experienced, accredited English language teachers use a communicative approach to teaching English. Through interactive activities, projects, and real-life simulations, our students build their English language skills in a fun and engaging way.

We also place a strong emphasis on cultural immersion, providing students with opportunities to learn about English-speaking countries and cultures. Our students engage in authentic cultural experiences, such as debates, storytelling, and drama performances to help them understand the nuances of English language.

The dedicated language classrooms are fully equipped with smart boards providing an engaging and interactive learning environment.

Class structure and curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to support students of all levels and cater to their different backgrounds and abilities. We offer three levels of English proficiency – beginner, intermediate, and advanced, so even if a student has no prior knowledge of English, they will be fully supported with a range of classes and resources to help them achieve their language goals.

Daily language learning is a key component of the program and we provide 150 hours of language instruction per year, prioritising the development of the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

This is targeted to the first-time English learner and, as such, teaches English at a beginner’s level. English is taught through the use of games and group work.

This is the intermediate level of English at SJIS for those children who can conduct a basic English language conversation. English 2 is ideal for students who have recently acquired the basic foundations of the English language.

This is the advanced level for English tuition at SJIS and is for students whose living language is English. The contents of this class are similar to the curriculum of the NSW Syllabus. Children will work on higher levels of English language content.

Events

The English Language Festival (Primary) and the English Speaking Competition (High School) are annual events where students can showcase their skills in English language and drama. We also plan culture days each term to develop students’ knowledge of the cultures within Australia and for students to reflect on their own cultural heritage. These events often incorporate songs, dance, games, art, and drama, and promote a deeper understanding of cultural diversity.

Special assessment

SJIS administers the annual TOEIC Bridge test from Year 2 to Year 9, providing an accurate measure of students’ progress in English language skills. The test is an internationally recognised certification of English proficiency, and is a valuable asset for students in their academic and professional pursuits and to track their achievements over time. It’s designed to be accessible and engaging for students of all levels, and provides a fun and challenging way for students to improve their language skills.

Name

The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling. May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
