Principal’s Welcome

Our School | Principal's Welcome

"At SJIS, we encourage students to learn about and deepen their understanding of many cultures and histories"

Welcome to the Sydney Japanese International School.

It is my great honour to welcome you to our wonderful school community. At SJIS our staff are focused on helping all of our students to reach their potential. We have the great opportunity as educators, to walk alongside our students and prepare them to become globally minded individuals who contribute proactively, positively and peacefully to the world.

At SJIS, we encourage students to learn about and deepen their understanding of many cultures and histories. Doing so opens their minds and they learn how to effectively communicate with others while respecting the thoughts and values of people from different backgrounds.

Our unique school offers a Japanese Division where children study the curriculum set by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, while children in the International Division study the Australian Curriculum for New South Wales.

In the Japanese Division, lessons are conducted in Japanese with native speakers. This equips students with language abilities on par with their counterparts in Japan. We also take a proactive approach to strengthening their English language skills by providing one period of English language learning every day, and by collaborating with the International Division and local schools.

In the International Division, lessons are conducted in English and Japanese language lessons are scheduled for one period every day. All of our students have the chance to not only learn about Japanese culture, but also to bring these experiences to life with a rich program of extra-curricular activities.

SJIS is unlike any other Japanese School around the world – it truly is a warm, happy community where students are able to experience cultural exchange daily.

I look forward to welcoming you to our exceptional school soon.

Mr Shinichiro Sumida
Principal
Sydney Japanese International School

I am honoured to welcome you to The Sydney Japanese International School. We are located in lovely bushland surrounds at Terrey Hills on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Our school is unique as we have two curriculums working harmoniously in the one school. Our international students follow the NESA NSW syllabus from Kindergarten to Year 6 while our Japanese students follow the Japanese MEXT syllabus from Year 1 to Year 9. And our students meet in the middle for mixed physical education, art and music lessons.

It never ceases to amaze me just how talented our International students are. They receive one lesson of Japanese a day so they leave for high school with such a strong Japanese language and cultural understanding.

Many people believe you have to be Japanese to come and enjoy our school. We actually have many nationalities attending the school because we have a rigorous academic program partnered with a holistic approach to learning including wellbeing programs, enrichment programs, sport and the arts.

Our school values are at the core of everything we do – Courtesy, Honesty, Responsibility, Generosity, Justice, Perseverance and Respect. Through our school values we reflect a school community the students, teachers and families can be proud of.

The spirit of Kakehashi.

Connecting the present to the future.

Connecting our students to the world.

Connecting cultures without borders.

Through the unique learning experience we offer at SJIS, we are guided by the idea that we are nurturing our students to become bridges. The Japanese word Kakehashi literally means “bridge”, and as a school, we celebrate the spirit of global connectivity.

We look forward to you visiting our school for a school tour or at our Open Day or at our Family Fun day sometime in the future.

Mrs Melita Abraham
Head of International Division

Name

The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling. May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
