Alumni update!

Following our Facebook post celebrating the 55th anniversary of Sydney Japanese International School, we were delighted to hear from some of our alumni from the class of 1976. Below, you will find their heartfelt comments and nostalgic photos from their recent reunion. Thank you very much for sharing your post! It’s wonderful to see lifelong friendships that continue to thrive after all these years.

We would also like to take this opportunity to honour Ms Hiroko Ishikawa, our beloved late music teacher. The beautiful singing voices of SJIS pupils still resonate in Terrey Hills, a testament to her lasting impact.

1976 alumni Ms Yoko Harada’s comment

The 7th SJIS students used to get together every few years, but due to COVID, it’s been nine years since we last met. (We had a meeting via Zoom, but it was the first time in nine years.)
Even though not all of us went to Sydney Japanese School at the same time, we relay memories and get excited every time.
In some cases, my friends remember more about what I did and the address I lived at the time than I do, which is a masterpiece.
These include one whose father was a Consulate-General diplomat who was instrumental in the establishment of the Japanese school, and another whose mother was Ms Hiroko Ishikawa, who was a music teacher at the school at the time.
In fact, this year’s reunion was held after a long time, as the news was shared that Ms Ishikawa passed away this year at the age of 94.
There were also a few people who donated when the current new school building was built, and you can see their names on the list of donors posted by that school building.
After the reunion, we have continued to interact online, but I think the most popular topic of conversation was about meat pies. Back then, if you bought a meat pie at the Tuck shop for lunch, it was a meat pie (there were no chicken cutlet curry bowls or anything like that, lol). Then I got nostalgic and a few people bought them on Amazon.
Next time we’re all in Sydney! I say. Hopefully it will happen…”

1976 alumni Mr Yuji Mitani’s comment

‘This time there were people I met again for the first time in 50 years since my primary school request, and people I met for the first time during different periods of my stay, so as usual we had a very good time. It was a reunion where we listened to people’s stories and remembered them, talked to people and remembered them again, and our memories of Sydney kept growing. Afterwards, exchanging nostalgic photos and small talk on social networking sites, etc., makes you feel like you are in one classroom. It’s also an opportunity to thank the teachers who took care of you back then and your parents who took you to Australia. And best of all, it’s fun because we can all sing the Japanese school song together!”

The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling. May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
