Japanese Division High School

Learning | Japanese High School Division (Japanese Curriculum Years 7-9)

Secondary education in Japan is divided into junior high school and senior high school. Junior high school covers Years 7 to 9, and it is mandatory for students to complete these years. Senior high school, which covers Years 10 to 12, is not mandatory, but in Japan more than 95% of students proceed to senior high school. Most schools require students to undertake an entrance exam and are academically ranked, based on their success in placing graduates in the most prestigious universities.

Why choose SJIS Japanese Division High School (Japanese Curriculum Years 7-9)?

Choosing the Japanese Division High School at SJIS provides numerous benefits for students who seek to study the foundations of Japanese culture while living in Australia.

Eligibility: Children with Japanese citizenship are eligible to enrol in the SJIS Japanese Division (Japanese Curriculum).

Students who are not Japanese citizens, but who have been undertaking Japanese education may also be eligible to enrol in the Japanese Division. However, they must meet certain entry requirements before any offer of enrolment is granted.

In the Japanese Division High School at SJIS, students can benefit from a complete educational journey from Years 7 to 9. The Division offers junior high school education, ensuring a smooth transition for students in these critical years of their academic journey. Moreover, SJIS understands the importance of preparing graduating Year 9 students for the Japanese high school entrance examinations. We provide specialised support and resources to help students excel in these examinations, increasing their chances of gaining admission to reputable high schools in Japan. By offering a comprehensive curriculum and focused preparation, the Japanese Division at SJIS equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive academically in the Japanese education system.

MEXT curriculum hours

In addition to the standard lesson hours suggested by MEXT in the table below, SJIS offers all Japanese Division high school students the added benefit of four English language classes each week, taught by experienced native English language teachers. This is in addition to the English language program delivered within the MEXT curriculum hours.

The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling. May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
